A Place of Our Own

Our long-term goal...

...is to own our own stand-alone facility where we can offer a wide variety of flexible support services to homeschooling families in the NE Illinois area.

To do this, we are on a (seemingly never-ending) quest to find a property that fulfills all six of our needs:

a. right location (around Wauconda, IL)

b. affordable price point

c. room for cars (pick-up/drop-off/parking)

d. sufficient indoor space for classes/gatherings year-round

e. sufficient land/outdoor space (not just building + parking)

f. appropriately zoned for our purpose

About the property we'd need...

UPDATE 7/13/2024: The Village of Hawthorn Woods will not permit us to use this converted house for our center. :(

UPDATE 4/15/2024: We found one!! We are under contract to purchase a converted single-family home on one acre in Hawthorn Woods, just south of Wauconda--very close to the yellow star below--as of 4/15/2024. Plans are underway, but we still have hurdles to overcome, primarily in the form of permission from the village to proceed with our plans. What work will need to be done to a property to make it operational as Harmony Center?

It depends on the current state of the property, but at a minimum everything must be in clean, sanitary, healthy, & in good working order. From there we enhance the property with technology, seating, appropriate floor & wall finishes, and learning materials/supplies via purchases or donations. Lastly we will enhance the outdoor space with natural & imaginative play features (things to climb on, swing from, etc.)

What regular costs would be incurred as part of the day-to-day operations of Harmony Center?

Taxes, utilities (lights, water, heat, a/c, garbage, internet), repairs for safety and to protect the investment, instructors (paid from student tuition and/or qualified volunteers), building & grounds maintenance, and liability insurance, miscellaneous supplies. It's a lot.
